Subletting: HDB conducts regular checks
I REFER to the letters by Madam Mary Tan ('How often does the HDB conduct checks?', Feb 6) and Mr Ng Kwong Yee ('Room for pragmatism', Feb 8).
HDB flats are meant for owner occupation. However, HDB also gives flat owners the flexibility to sublet rooms to supplement their income. Owners who wish to sublet their whole flat must obtain HDB approval and fulfil the minimum occupation period requirement.
HDB conducts routine inspections of all HDB blocks and regular checks on flats that have been approved for subletting. We also investigate suspected cases of illegal subletting.
HDB will impose financial penalties or compulsorily acquire the flat for those found guilty of unauthorised subletting.
Members of the public with information on unauthorised subletting of HDB flats can help us by calling our branch office service line on 1800-2255-432. Callers are assured of confidentiality.
